General Community News

Accelerating Ubuntu Core Desktop

Jon Seager reminds us of Ubuntu Core and the plans to create a immutable Ubuntu Core Desktop, with the 2023 Ubuntu Core Desktop preview ‘falling short of the vision’. That 2023 attempt provided some insights into problems, with us being told of more recent work, and requirements that users need and can benefit from. We’re told of the key challenges, of the KDE Neon Core development, and the next required steps. We’re reminded the traditional Ubuntu Desktop is not going away, but told the Ubuntu Core Desktop may be the future.

Security advisory: Critical vulnerability found in Canonical LXD and MicroCloud

Mark Laing reports a “critical vulnerability affecting LXD and MicroCloud has been identified and addressed” and gives us details. We’re urged to update ‘immediately’. We are given a link to the CVE-2026-112816 thread if we need more, a list of snap versions with fixes included, and told how we can address this issue. Thanks is given to Stéphane Graber for his collaboration.

Tenacious T-Rex is now open for development

Graham Inggs announces that Ubuntu Tenacious T-Rex is “open for development”. We’re told the auto-sync from Debian will be enabled soon, given a link to the release schedule, and reminded a large influx of builds & autopkgtests are expected. Any help in fixing issues will be appreciated. We’re also reminded the “-changes mailing list is no more” and told of the atom feed that’s replaced it.

Slimming your snaps

Daniel W. Steinbrook reminds us of initial size limits put on Ubuntu images back in 2004 due to network speeds & disk sizes. Whilst those limits may not apply as much today, there are still benefits to keeping things small. With that said, Daniel discusses the relation to snap packages in this post. We’re told (as developers) we can firstly note the library linter messages, and given some help with that, before moving on to content snaps, and more. This post (aimed at developers) lays out the options we have that can reduce the size of our own snap packages.

Ubuntu firmware HWE will prevent issues on older kernel

Joey Sneddon informs us that Ubuntu is planning a new ‘linux-firmware-hwe’ package and gives us details of that, including why its required, as noted by Juerg Haefliger. We’re also alerted to a potential problem where both GA & HWE stacks are installed, but that will be addressed as well shortly.
